Advisor: Soon Ki Jung. Date and location of PhD thesis defense: 3 December 2013, Kyungpook National UniversityMany automobile companies and researchers have developed various safety systems to reduce fatalities by traffic accidents. In order to prevent traffic accidents by distracted driving, therefore, we present the vehicle and pedestrian detection using a novel image representation called equi-height mosaicking system. Furthermore, we additionally suggest the part-based side detection method using equi-height peripheral mosaicking image to detect approaching vehicles while driving

Proto-type installation of a double-station system for the optical-video-detection and orbital characterisation of a meteor/fireball in South Korea

We give a detailed description of the installation and operation of a double-station meteor detection system which formed part of a research & education project between Korea Astronomy Space Science Institute and Daejeon Science Highschool. A total of six light-sensitive CCD cameras were installed with three cameras at SOAO and three cameras at BOAO observatory. A double-station observation of a meteor event enables the determination of the three-dimensional orbit in space. This project was initiated in response to the Jinju fireball event in March 2014. The cameras were installed in October/November 2014. The two stations are identical in hardware as well as software. Each station employes sensitive Watec-902H2 cameras in combination with relatively fast f/1.2 lenses. Various fields of views were used for measuring differences in detection rates of meteor events. We employed the SonotaCo UFO software suite for meteor detection and their subsequent analysis. The system setup as well as installation/operation experience is described and first results are presented. We also give a brief overview of historic as well as recent meteor (fall) detections in South Korea. Interpolation for molecular dynamics simulations: from ions in gas phase to proteins in solution

    Get PDF
The interpolation technique has shown many promises for simulating chemical dynamics with quantum chemical accuracy at molecular mechanics speed. This is achieved by constructing analytic potential energy surfaces with quantum chemical information at multiple conformational points, without assuming any functional form for the potentials. Here, we briefly review the course the method was developed over the past few decades, with a special focus on the activities in Korea. We also describe its strengths and weaknesses toward describing condensed phase chemical dynamics with the present implementations. Perspectives for future developments toward increasing applicability are discussed as concluding remarks. (c) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.1122Ysciescopu

Unanticipated Mechanism of the Trimethylsilyl Motif in Electrolyte Additives on Nickel-Rich Cathodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

School of Energy and Chemical Engineering (Battery Science and Technology)Various electrolyte additives containing trimethylsilyl (TMS) motif have been reported to remove HF formed by the decomposition of LiPF6-based electrolyte and suppress dissolving transition metal from the cathode in Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Among them, tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphite (TMSP) was used as a multi-functional additive that increases the cycle performance of LIBs by forming a stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer by decomposing before the electrolyte as well as scavenging HF which present in electrolytes. However, we found that TMSP-containing electrolyte exhibited poor performance compared to baseline electrolyte that does not have a TMS motif on 80% Ni-containing LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) electrodes. At this, we compared the cycle performance of TMSP-containing electrolyte using not only NCM electrode with 80% Ni content but also 60% electrode and LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode with 80% nickel content. In addition, we propose the causes and mechanism of deterioration of additives with TMS motifs using NMR, SEM, and TEM analysis.ope

Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in a community-based population : a potential role in adult-onset asthma

Background: Recent studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin sensitization is a risk factor for asthma. However, there is a paucity of epidemiologic evidence on adult-onset asthma in community-based populations. Objective: We sought to evaluate the epidemiology and the clinical significance of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in community-based adult populations. Methods: The present analyses were performed using the baseline data set of Korean adult population surveys, consisting of 1080 adults (mean age=60.2years) recruited from an urban and a rural community. Questionnaires, methacholine challenge tests, and allergen skin tests were performed for defining clinical phenotypes. Sera were analysed for total IgE and enterotoxin-specific IgE using ImmunoCAP. Results: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization (0.35kU/L) had a prevalence of 27.0%. Risk factors were identified as male sex, current smoking, advanced age (61years), and inhalant allergen sensitization. Current asthma was mostly adult onset (18years old) and showed independent associations with high enterotoxin-specific IgE levels in multivariate logistic regression tests. In multivariate linear regressions, staphylococcal enterotoxin-specific IgE level was identified as the major determinant factor for total IgE level. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization was independently associated with adult-onset asthma in adult community populations. Strong correlations between the enterotoxin-specific IgE and total IgE levels support the clinical significance. The present findings warrant further studies for the precise roles of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in the asthma pathogenesis
